The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Reveal a Latest Divinity, Labeling it Their Biggest RPG to Date

The speculation around The Game Awards was significant, especially after host Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic image of a strange statue. The question has now been solved. Larian Studios is developing a completely new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was debuted with a daring trailer that included striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the very descent into chaos.

Not the Expected Sequel

Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. The studio warned that a follow-up to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not currently in development.

Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This phrasing hints that the team could be designing a real-time experience as opposed to another turn-based title. Currently, this is speculation, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is widely praised and arguably it pioneered the recent resurgence of complex computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for detailed worlds, player agency, and complex character building—traits that subsequently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is classic fantasy, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust bestowed upon the player.

Where many modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is full of specialized paths that are viable if you're playing as a particular class or origin with a personal story.

The series is also famously permissive, allowing players to improvise both in story and combat. Most missions can be solved in multiple ways, sometimes in unexpected fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you remembered something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by teleporting a glob of lava in a unorthodox way.

The Journey Continues

It is precisely these elements that lead fans and critics to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, fans can get ready for another adventure in this groundbreaking franchise.
